i just hinged my bed today i had some spare rodends and made some tabs, on my frame i have a 2x3 crossmember and welded the tabs to that then welded the bushings to the rear bed mounts. works but i think im gonna make some mounts for the bushings to sit on (like axle saddles) then weld that to the bed mounts and gonna use some gas struts to lift it.
Im not gonna drive it like that. It's just so i can work on it, and going to use a hood latch and striker to keep it closed.

O.G.Tierdrop
06-23-2009, 02:41 AM
hey 97xe you got any shots of the actual set up, like how the bed is mounted up, and crap like that....and mark wheres the z rack pic set up

97xenissan
06-23-2009, 02:55 AM
jimmy726 they are the stock wheel tubs, I cut out a 12" section out of the bed then shortend the tubs and pie cut the tops and bottom halves to make the contuors flow to gether.
http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/68/l_789540ddd9c0df60fa73e5492d1ccebd.jpg (http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=143672078&albumID=1111309&imageID=25529636#a=1111309&i=25529640)

Ratrod25: No the bed has the factory 1" gap used a friends d21 to measure with could probably move it in a little closer.

O.G.Tierdrop: I just made a basic hinge, like a 4-link mount and then the rodend without the link bar. if u look under your truck u will see the last bed mount right at the end of the floor. thats where the bushings are welded to. No Z rack its just so i can work on it pulling the bed off sucks just to find a loose wire.

So the bed doesnt hit the cab when you lift it?

97xenissan
06-23-2009, 03:00 AM
no sir. i thought it would but the bed moves back and up as it rotates so it clears the cab.

& the side tilt hinges on the 620 [passenger side of frame]. I used round tubing welded to square tubing welded to the frame. The bed has the same part & i use a large "pin" to secure them together...

thanks Pacific Coast, I just wanted something to make it easier to access the back of the truck. Im kinda thinking of using a 12v actuator to make it lift??? or maybe just some heavy duty gas support struts.

Tier -ill meet you half way in Arizona :D My buddy has a big shop we can hook up you bed in a few days.
97- you can even use a single bag to lift it.

97xenissan
06-23-2009, 04:13 PM
pacific would the bag need to be mounted in the center, or could it be mounted to one side? cause i dont have very much room in there.

I have a tilt bed, I cut the ends of a leaf spring and made some tabs. http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh289/accordwagon4/Datsun194.jpghttp://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh289/accordwagon4/Datsun188.jpghttp://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh289/accordwagon4/Datsun201-1.jpghttp://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh289/accordwagon4/Datsun200.jpghttp://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh289/accordwagon4/Datsun199.jpg

hmmm i didt even think of putting bags there , im gonna have to measure and see, but my frame layout is the same, with the gastank at the very back of the frame. and the hinge setup is the same. I think i already asked, (im at work gotta be sneaky) but how did u secure your bed up front? I was thinking of a hoodlatch and striker but i dont know if it will be strong enough.

97- id put the bag right in the middle of the bed. The farther back its mounted the more lift you'll get.

twisted92
06-25-2009, 01:03 AM
i used a set of barn door hinges, welded to frame and bed. used a set of air shocks mounted to frame and bed. all done for less than a 100 bucks. using a 12 dollor walmart comp on a toggle switch

well i thought it would work like that but everytime i would hit a bump or something it would bounce around, im gonna try some hood pins through the bed mounts see how that works. But the tilt bed is nice no more contorsionist just to change a compressor filter.

you could get a small pneumatic actuator (http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4KB69) to work as a pin. hook it up to the air system and be able to lock and unlock it with a switch.

88hb
06-27-2009, 12:54 AM
or u can hook up a door popper solenoid to a bear claw door latch, and have it remote operated, or inside the cab some where.

97xenissan
06-27-2009, 02:48 PM
im such an idiot i didnt even think of an actuator to use as a pin theres some at my work, gonna check it out

Mine is just a side tilt. I cut the bed mount down 3/8" or so, then welded on a couple steel home door hinges that were cut cown to size.

At some of the bed dance competitions in the late 90's, they had some that the beds spun very fast. Some people cut the bedsides, hinged those too, and just the centrifugal forcethrew them up. They had starter motors and ring gears on the z-racks that the bed spun on. Later some people 1/4'd their beds at cool angles, and hinges all the corners to open like a flower.

I'm working on my tilt bed right now. Using heavy duty hinges in the back, keepin it held down with hood pins and rubber washers so it doesn't bounce around. Workin on a way to keep it propped up. Got a few ideas. Doing it cause I'm tired of taking it off to work on things and so I can shave my gas door and just lift the bed to get gas. (aka Show off at the gas station lol!)
