ok bare with my ignorance. but i went to look into some wheels for ethel and the dude told me i could instead of having the rim bored, he told me i could shave the outter part of the hub with i wanna say a side grinder? i think thats what he was talking about but i wanted to check with yall and see if anyone has heard of anything along these lines and or done this themselves and could fill me in a lil more in depth

some people claim grinding the hubs is safe. some feel that its not the best way to do it.
im withholding judgment until i see a cross section of a ground down hub.
but yes, its been done.

ive done both and never had a problem either way but your safest bet is to just bore the wheel...
carlos
ive always bored the wheels. its jsut easier. u gotta do the fronts why not do all

u can put the hubs on a brake lathe and turn the center down. That works pretty good. The back is the only one that takes a long time. Mine hubs have been grinded and i drive mine everyday.Never had a problem.

Check the phone book. Gulf hydraulics in diberville will do them and mcmurtry's machine service in gulfport will do them as well. You'll be looking at 125-150 depending on what type of wheel you have.

Thnx Scott, I'll check that out..some people say that once they're bored out, they have balancing issues so I was just gonna grind the hubs out a lil and use 1/4" spacers I got off Ebay, but I'll go with boring them if it's the best route to take in the long run.:thumb:

if you think about that a little, youll see boring the wheels is the best way.
the hubs are also a rotating mass and are balanced from the factory. if you grind them they can become unbalanced. and you cant exactly take your hub off and go get it balanced at a tire shop.

Mine's drilled for toyota rims and the previous owner shaved the hub. Not ideal but I have never had a problem with vibration or them snapping off. Now if this was a full size or something that I used to haul stuff I wouldn't shave the hubs.

u can also balance th rims using th lugholes instead of the center hole if th shop has th adapter.

lol appreciate the insight fellas thnx...but another wrench in the get along...the wheels i want when she transistions into a full show truck are for an s10 switching the hubs is how im under the impression to do it...does this still have to be done if i switch to an s10 hub?
Mr.Ryan

not sure if an s-10 hub will go on, but My wheels where bored and I just sold them to a buddy of mine the reason they don't balance up right is people use the center hub hole adapter to mount the wheel to the balancer, I have a hunter road force balancer and I used the lug hole adapter and they balanced almost perfect and that was with a set of 33" tires on them lug balancing is the best way to do it since that's what the truck and wheel see on the road.

If you dont bore it all the way they can put the cone on the outside of the wheels..

I haven't been able to find the 1/2 by 1/2 carbide or rabbeting bit in my local Lowe's or Home Depot.
Who's got "the source"?

they use the same bit for all of them
edit..yea most wheels
ScottXGTR

that bit works for most wheels. i wont say it works for all wheels because some require a trim bit as well. if you arent familiar with routers and the bits available, then id recommend doing a lot of homework. all else fails, paying a machine shop is cheaper than ruining a set of wheels.
