i've done and or tried the following:
cut the brown and ornage wires on the tach itself.
tried to jump the pink and blue wire on pin 7 of the ecu-no signal
tried to jump the brown and yellow wire on the distributor-no singal
any help would be appreciated. worst case i will just try all the wires on the distributor with a test light looking for a pulsing light. thanx in advance.

Per the nissan fsm pin 3 is the tach wire on the ecu connector.

would it be easier to swap in a stock cluster that does have the tach?
nissans being the way they are the wiring for it could already be there.

I just mounted an autometer ontop of the dash all the way over to the left.
Obviously you have a ground and a power.
The other wire i just put into the connection off of the distributor..
It reads my rpm's perfectly..

i just bought a stock cluster that came with a tach for my 98. the cluster came from a 00 model. it wont plug directly in. i still have to get the harness so i can wire it in. just so you know, 98 and 99 are same but 00+ is not, you'll have to get the pigtail to go w/ it

yes sir!... :D
95% of the wires off the cluster matched the wiring on my truck. The other 5% I had to use the fsm to figure out where they needed to go.

also..
today at work, a 01 nissan altima came in for some work.. Looking at the cluster on it, it looks identical to the one i have. I bought mine off a 00 frontier.

finally figured out the tach signal on the distributor. there are 2 plugs coming off of the distributor. one has 6 or 7 wires. there is another plug with 2 wires. on the plug with 2 wires, the red and black wire is your tach signal.
