Does the front get enough lift to clear the 20's?
Can't really tell from the pictures.
Just barely right now.. when my contorl arms come in im hoping for a little more after putting them on.
at the rear crossmember, you notched the rear tube and butted the other one up to it. do you think that was harder or easier than the angle cuts like the notch? i'll be starting on mine soon so i'm looking for any kind of tips.
I will try to get some more pictures later on...basically what i did was cut off the old frame rails and traced a pattern on the floor then made my new rails the exact same profile as my old ones so that everything would clear my bed but i left the rails at the cab longer so that when i welded it back it would supported in two places. kinda hard to explain just have to see the pictures i guess lol
Here is a couple of pics from Pugz Gatordrag coverage.. you can kind of see where the new frame connects to the old one. the new frame extends farther back and is connected again to the old frame... i am going to put some more gussets in at various place to make sure the frame doesnt flex side to side too.

Wow i have defininately been slacking on the updates of the truck. Well thats due to us building a house these past months, Oh and a HUGE shop!! Hahaha Wife is getting her house and i am getting the shop of my dreams, a 30x40 with space for a two post lift!:nana: so needless to say the truck has not gotten any attention lately. Hopefully that will end soon and i can dive back into full force. Here are some pics of the house and shop.

Man you got a kick ass setup there with the house and shop and all, But I got a couple of questions about the truck. Did you narrow the rearend by yourself or get it done at a shop? I am going to try to use 8 X 18 Titan wheels and I dont want to mod my bedside.

Yeah i narrowed a toy rear 10.5 inches total. Sent the axles to Moser and had them resplined.

A. Yes, if by stock you mean swapped to 5 lug with a custom frame and rear end narrowed 10 inches.
Every time I see your truck that's what pops into my mind. Good times :D

So, what all is involved in getting the axles shortened? What was the process (getting in touch w/ the company, etc.) and about how much $?? I need some room in the back, and I'm sure I can shorten the axle tubes, but definitely not the axles, so if it's not an arm and leg to get new axles, I may narrow my rear end a little instead of milling my wheels.
Minitucking
10-03-2008, 02:25 AM
Got to cut the tubes first then i made some pucks on my lathe that fit in the outer bearing slots and the carrier bearing slots. These pucks had a 1.5 hole in the center of all four pucks. when i welded it back i used a cold rolled solid 1.5 rod slid through the middle of all the pucks to line all the bearings up. Then i welded carefully to make sure it didnt draw to much to one side or the other. that was the hard part. The axles i sent off to Moser axles where they shortened and resplined the axles for $110 for both axles. of course i had to pay shipping both ways so i think it ended up being around $150 for the axles and another $175 for the 3.5" round by 12" long chunk of alluminum to make the pucks and the cold rolled solid rod. So probably cost me $325 to do it myself. i got prices for somebody to do it with new axles for around $700 here locally.... since then i have done a ford 9" for my buddys 69 chevy burban.

10-03-2008, 01:20 PM
just asking, but would you be interested in helping me do my datto axles? i am about to back half the rear and i want it to tuck nicely in the rear. it will probably be late next year before i am ready, but i would pay $$$ so as not to pay out the ASS at a shop :D

Been working on the frame, trying to get it ready for paint. Fabbed new tranny crossmember, carrier bearing crossmember, shocks front and back, air tank mounting, fuel tank mounting, notched frame for header on pass. side, cleanup and reweld backhalf, weld and grind smooth all holes in frame. Right now i am fabbing new inner fender wells in the engine compartment and getting my radiator mounted. As far as the LT1 goes, i got it back from the machine shop and got the shortblock assembled and block primed. Waiting on the heads from the machine shop to finish assembly and paint. Nothing done to the front besides normal bags and control arms.
Thanks for all the compliments guys and girls!!
The rest of my motor internals are coming tommorrow so i will get some pictures of it all together and some more of my inner fender wells also.
Oh and I am thinking about naming this project "OVER BUDGET" LOL!!!

Ok so i just about finished the front inner fender wells, finished bolting up the fuel cell, airtank, battery holder, and backup compressor. Also got the heads on the motor. Motor components so far.... Block, crank, rods, heads, lifters are all stock i have added Keith Black forged pistons, Comp Cams 503 Cam, Comp Cams Beehive Springs, Comp Cams 10degree retainers and locks, comp cams magnum roller rockers, comp cams hardened pushrods, and ARP Head bolts. Still cleaning up the intake manifold but should be finished with that today. Heres some pics.

Just wondering why you put rear shocks on? Did it ride like crap (bouncy) or does it pop bags, do you have the same amount of lift with them. I like the idea of heaps of lift but i can't see how this is achieved with shocks. The engine looks sweet, can't wait to see the truck running!

Thanks for the compliments!! I allways run shocks with bags. Bags are just like coil springs. they bounce. shocks are needed to dampen the bouncing. I can get full lift with the shocks i am running. They are rear shocks for a 1990 chevy fullsize pickup. The fronts are some rancho shocks that were the size that i needed.

Sorry i didnt get back to you on the other page. I am runnig a 5 gallon tank with a sanden508 Engine driven compressor with a viar 480 as a backup. I find the 5 gallons is plenty enough for me. If you want to hop or play a lot with your bags get a bigger tank and either two compressors or a oasis compressor.

Damn that truck is looking great. Kinda weird contrast of colors with the white and bronze/copper colored frame. What made you pick those colors?
On another note. That 97 engine I got from you last year that you had in this truck? So far have put 10,000 miles on it. Running great. About to buy a header for it soon.
Wish I could say that about the other 97 I got from you. I sold it to a member here, then he traded it for wheels. That guy put it in his truck without doing anything to it. I believe he left it out in the weather. Locked up when he tried to run it.
Keep up the great work.

Yeah its stainless and i got it from a place here in town called McJunkin/Redman and also a place called moody price. I think its .035 wall thickness. Your gonna need 1/2 tubing bender with a roller mandrel to bend it and then its still not gonna be easy. lol

What about the fittings, I can't tell in the pics If they're ptc or compression. Or did you flare the ends and use flare nuts, like hard brake lines?
if u want ptc with hard line u gotta get the norgren fittings. theres another place thats good too. but dont use the parker ptc with hard line.

I used parkers single ferrule and dual ferrule compression fittings. They are very expensive!!! You can also use swaglok compression fittings wich are even more expensive. I think a straight 1/2" npt to 1/2" tube from the store would run around $15 ea. But my brother works in the plants soooo well you can guess the rest. LOL
thats it... swaglok and norgren are bad ass ptc for hard line. if u prep the line right you wont have any leaks. fitting are $5+ each though but worth it.

Been working on a front brake setup for the past few months. Came across some 4 piston brembo's and rotors so i picked up and started fitting them up. Had to fab a new bracket for them to bolt up and turn down the outside diameter of the hub because the rotors fit over the hub instead of bolting up to the back. Downside to this is it spaces the wheels 1/4" on both sides and if your allready tight on clearance this is bad. You would not beleive the size of these freakin rotors!! They are 14" crossdrilled and HEAVY!! I took some size comparison pics for yall. later on when i get everything done i make a write up of it so if anybody else wants to attempt it they will have a little direction. Here yall go.

Man, that doesnt leave much room for adding fluid to the brake reservoir.
Cool non the less.

The amount of miles most of these thing see, access to the master cylinder shouldn't be to much of a concern after the initial bleeding.
Love your setup man, can't wait to see this in the mags.

I think I've seen kits for remote fills for MC's like that. Just places a small reservoir on the other side of the firewall.
Nice setup though. Makes for a super clean engine bay & plenty of room for the 20's

did they bolt up to the yota rear or is it a explorer 8.8?
Minitucking
11-23-2009, 11:17 PM
Bolted up to the Toyota rear but I had make a bracket for it. Optimal thing would be the rear outa a mustang with the disc

11-23-2009, 11:32 PM
yeah I need to do disc in the rear the drums arent going to cut it lol why spend all the money for the front upgrade then get drums in the rear....I did see on the yota site you can buy brackets on ebay for the disc setup or you can cut them out of plate...I will have to see what I can get done as the truck is being built by someone else while im out on the rd

Not really any progress lately... been busy with the holidays and with the wife being pregnant that too.. got my exhaust 95% finished and started making panels for the wheelwells. I am hoping to get it to paint by april. I still have to cut out the rockers and replace them from the younger days of dragging. Going to cut out my back wall and make the body line wraparound. Sooo still have a lot of work to do its just getting to it that the problem. lol

If its still a Nissan MC....steal the Reservior from a Nissan Van...Serenas (C23)mean anything to you guys?
They run a remote mounted reservior so all you need to do is steal that and the fittings that clip onto the MC and then use a suitable lenght of hose..
i tried finding a pic for you guys to better explain myself to no luck....
just an idea for ya's
peace

Thats makes alot of sense. The way you describe that set up is just like Chevrolet does with the full size vans. Rock Crawlers love these for when they convert to full hydraulic steering. More fluid means more volume.
