Just lookin for some ideas as to what this could be...
1 Day I was cruisin my '89 Z24 carby and i noticed that when i stopped at a red the idling was skippin beats.. didnt think much of it..
got it home and i noticed its chuffing black smoke out the exhaust (not bellowing out but its noticable) and when idling or giving it a little rev, its runs so lumpy the car shakes. Turned the idle up a bit and it still misses so it not the idle screw.
Changed all the leads and plugs - No change
Checked oil condition and level - all Fine
Checked Distributor Cap and Rotor Plug - All Perfect
I'm thinkin it could have something to do with the carby but im not that clued in with them....
Any ideas or anyone had similar problems?
your 89 has a carb? the 87-89 ones here are TBI.
Sounds like it's running rich. If it's carb I would assume there's an idle mixture screw. Not sure where though never played with the z24 carbs.

Mine is an 88 and it is fuel injected yours should be too yeti if the engine code is Z24i the i is for Injected the Z24 was carbed just that the TB looks like a carb it is TBI throttle body injection, your thinking of MPFI multi port fuel injection, or even TPI tuned port injection like on camaros and vettes.

i've had my breather off and looked, it doesn't have an injector in the centre of it, i kinda just assumed the "I" part cause i don't know a whole lot about nissan motors and saw a lot of people using that term. but mine is carbed
my 87 V6 was TBI...yeti can you take a pic of yours? I'm wondering if someone put a carb on it? or if it is in fact a TBI

you wont see and injector because it is under the little aluminum cover. there are 2 of them there. it is a very basic TBI set up that i am having a bitch of a time with right now. dam ground isssues........

What capacity do the these injectors spray at? Are there any other throttle body injectors that will work bedside's the one's from a hard body? My buddy had a broken down jeep comanche, and we poped an old tb injector from an s10, it made it go, but it didn't spray enough fuel. He found out that one out of a 305 tbi was the same one.

That sounds like some of the problems I was having along with worse problems.I'm gonna step out on a limb here & say you got a throttle body judging by the year. I fixed mine by cleaning the Air Flow Meter with rubbing alky & q-tip (there's a write up some where on here), (liittle black box on side of throttle body with a wire plug on it with 3 screws holding on the box...1 hidden under it but its there) BUT make sure you clean inside the hole on the throttle body that the little cylinder looking piece on the meter go's into as well. I made the mistake originally by not cleaning the inside & it got worse!!!! So I cleaned the inside & put it back together & even disconnected the battery to try & reset battery for good measure. Fired up after everything was connected & tight, it runs beautiful now :) I realize that you may be having someone else fix it but I'm just posting this in case someone else finds this & it just so happens to help them.

that sounds to me like one of your coils may be bad they should be located on driverside inner fender

now i am guessing someone may have switched it to carb because the 89 z24i should have a throttle body with the 8 pin connector where the 87 had a 6 pin connector there was no carbed d21's from the factory that i know of. but if it has been swapped you could have a float sticking causing it to flood the engine giving you your black smoke but if its tbi my first guess would be mass air flow

My 86 is TBI. I have no Maf. just a TP sensor on the side. ive questioned it cause every blue moon ill give it gas while driving and the motor dies for a spit second. like its not getting fuel cuase the sensor thinks im not pushing the gas. other than that maybe try your O2 sensor. that can cause a rich concern.

They do have a airflow built in the side of unit! I converted my 88 to a weber carb setup cause the tbi stinks after they get too many miles on them.
About $350 for the kit comes with everything you need. You will have to get a z24 carbed intake for the conversion. But maybe someone has done that for you.lol!
Here's a pic of my setup,it should look similar.http://infamousnissan.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=386&pictureid=7323

It runs great! But lets keep things on the real! I would much rather have fuel injection that runs right than have to go to carb! Dont get me wrong, I like it, it runs perfect! Looks bad a$$ too.But I paid $100 for my truck cause it set in a field for 6 yrs and was never started.
All the injection was messed up, I went through hell getting it home.
Fella said it ran. Well it idled good and thats about it.
This was my best option. I have NO computer! I run a 720 vacumm advance distributor! This thing is as basic as a old 60's truck!
Now that Im almost done, I actually like it! Really simple!:thumb:

Like zane said....nice. I want a nap z so bad!
My father had an '87 2-door pathy. Sputtered at idle and couldn't push the throttle over half way down to accelerate. TPS was the fix and a good cleaning. Just throwing that out there.

Just throwing that out there. Thanks guys, this pic was taken right after the carb set up. I'll get some knew ones up, its going to be cleaner than that. Fire wall stuff, you know. little things, not much. I want to make my own intake! My dad did a old 260z one time and the torque was outrageous! The only issue so far is the water passage in the intake. I'll figure it out though.
