As promised, here is a few pics of what i have been up to on my d21.
I have included some stripped interior photos for those who might be interested in seeing whats inside a 4 door.

its the pre-facelift model which had a different/ flat tailgate, different wheel arches,, front guards, grill, lights and bumper, the rest is the same, as far as i know.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/newnavback.jpg

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/newnav.jpg

i quickly sold off the disgusting canopy for a case of beer! win/win for me:thumb:

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/nocanopy.jpg

and it made it into the bigger garage where the real action happens.
here it is sitting next to my lotus7 replica (last years project which was finished and road registerd, but has been stripped for more changes,

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/newhome.jpg

thought that the tub was too small for hauling my bikes/car parts and tools to work, i decided a stretch was in order, the old tub came off and got sawzall'd into small peices and sent off for metal recycling. i completly stripped the rear, i wont be using the diff or fuel tank/ anything past the cab

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/tuboff.jpg

found a 95 (updated wheelarch) singlecab tub at my local wreckers (amazing!) they are not all that easy to find, i was expecting a 10 hour drive to get one like i had to for my last tub! and it was cheap too.

also stripped all the front, i wont be using any of the running gear, and will update the front, i dont know what model front i want yet,

chassis needs to stretch 750mm (sorry about the metric)
overall length of the truck should be very close to 5.5m

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/tubon.jpg

started to play around with suspension, cut out the bump stops, measured how much i needed to lay on a 4" bd (it has 25° NC )

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/25degreesnc.jpg

then stripped the whole brown interior out and started to plan the BD.

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/strippedout2.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/strippedout3.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/tubon.jpg

got some goodies in the post , just before christmas,
along with all the RHS steel to remake most of the chassis, and the Bodydrop

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/bushes.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/spindles.jpg

removed the tub and put it out of the way while i cut down the sills, and crammed some 75x25x4mm rhs in there for strength
and then cut out the floor for the traditional bodydrop.
i went with traditional, because with the stretch, extra load, and im paranoid about stuff being strong enough, i didnt want to reduce the 125mm stock chassis height under the cab.

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/RHSsills.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/BD1.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/BDenginebay.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m152/turboseven7/navara/BD3.jpg

and thats all i really have at the moment, im still finishing off the welding on the bd, and playing with seating heights (and slacking off, it is the holidays afterall!)

more updates as they happen!

Thanks for everyones positive comments, i have only been working on this for 6 weeks, but stripping it out and cutting metal is the cheapest part, progress will slow down when the expensive bits need doing:(

Im 99% sure my early pre-facelift model never came with a chrome bumper, i have never seen one, and cant find any aftermarket ones on ebay.com.au, but they do have chrome grilles and corner lamps.

however later aussie d21's (93 onwards, and all years of king cabs) did have a chrome bumper same as sparkinframes on page 1.
http://www.ozeparts.com.au (http://www.ozeparts.com.au/) (under nissan/datsun--navara ute--whatever year you want) has more details and you can also buy the old style guards if thats what you like. unfortunatly i sent the whole front end and tub off to the scrap metal yard, because the early model parts are worthless here.

:D how big is ya garage?! i just measured my new rails, and from the towhitch (close to rollpan) to the front where the tension rods are, is 5200mm on the dot. (i shortened mine a bit for if/when i unibody it  )

and entropyy: thats my homemade lotus7 replica, it has a sr20det, it is rather fun, but it needs paint and polish.. theres pics in the "other cars" post.

managed to actually build something this past weekend for the truck,
zapped together a couple of rails, still need to fishplate the welds and add a bit of tube work to them, i finished those long welds after this photo was taken. i'll try to get them on the main chassis this weekend.

why the dubble frame rales b4 the cab...just strength?

Swschz
01-20-2009, 08:10 AM
maybe "one" rail is going to be a sealed and made into a air tank, easier than making the whole rail air tight and sleeving all penetrations ( think bolts for steering box etc)

Rocket
01-20-2009, 09:06 AM
CARfab, dont try fitting king cab front end, there is a guy on ebay, his ebay account is customrideauto, he sells a whole chrome package from time to time, for the d21, he sells them for king cab and for single cab, give him a buzz

CARfab
01-20-2009, 09:53 AM
the double rails are really only because i couldn't get 125x50mm rhs (the size i needed to sleeve into the existing chassis), extra strenght if any is an added bonus, its not as fancy as it looks!, i do like the idea of a chassis air tank, but i want to use aluminium, chrome or stainless tanks, as a friend of mine had issues with rust in the air lines and valves with a steel tank, maybe because we are near the beach? im not sure, i never had any issues with my last stainless ones.

and rocket, i probably wont be using a d21 front, early d22 is a favorite of mine, but that's been 'done' already. i still have a long time to think about it before i get to panel work.

bring on the weekend, hopfully its not so hot again!

my neighbor brought a chevy truck from washington here to hawaii
its that black chevy truck in transformers
anyway, they told him he needed atleast 1000miles for him to reg and he already has ~1200
in washington, he got a bigger turbo, tuned ecu and other things before coming here
they wanted him to pay 8g to reg
it is the second in hawaii but first crew cab and first 4x4
the one like this but body stock

sorry for the updates delay!!
all the pics of texmex and other recent shows have got me inspired again, but im sorry to say, not a lot has happened recently on the d21. but these things take time. and i dont want to rush this,
i don't keep cars when im not 100% happy with them, and with the amount of work this thing needs, i DO want to keep this one http://minitruckin.com.au/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
Im not going to be spending much$$$ on it this year either, there is not alot of building work available around here at the moment,
im still trying to do some work on the house, i still have to keep the tyres upto my daily s14 silvia http://minitruckin.com.au/forum/images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif and i have to save anything else
for a Japan holiday in august.
BUT! cutting and welding is cheap, so i cut all the 4link and watts brackets from sheet with a grinder, drilled and linished them all by hand, and made the bars
im starting to see where my time has gone! i still can finish the rear end and bodydrop without spending much, which should keep me busy for a while.
here's a quick photo of where its at at the moment, thanks for tuning in!
its looking a bit industrial at the moment, hopfully it will look better once i get the rest of the gear and a bit of tubework in there.

CARfab

...how are they weird?

i agree? can you explain, im no expert at suspension geometry, and im more than open to all the advice i can get,

its just a parallel 4bar with reversed wattslink.

i just wanted the trailing arms as long as possible, to:

(1) reduce the amount of swing the diff will get through travel, in hope that i wouldn't need a slip joint in the propshaft,, which i still do need, because it has about 18mm over the suspension travel!!

(2) because im running cantilever setup, reduce the amount of umm.. "bend" the airbag will have in the inflated position. if you know what i mean. im not good at explaining things.

Swschz
03-27-2009, 10:50 AM
i think hes refereing to the bars,in the sense that they arnt round, dont have the shiny chrome "super duper pivoty things" on the ends, that you simply used box section, and you havent capped the ends?????

i assume your going to trim and cap the ends?

how are you mounting your bags? a true cantilever or just mechanical advantage?

CARfab
03-27-2009, 11:02 AM
My engineer wanted box section, and the airbag a maximum 1/3rd along the lower arm, from the diff, for strength reasons. and the polyurethane bushes are enormous, bigger than i originally wanted, and will have plenty of flex for any pivoting it may need, while being quiet, a smooth ride, and maintenance free.

i will be capping the ends of the arms, and making them look more attractive, i wanted to make something special of them, but the could be in the way of shock absorber placement now. which is my next adventure on this thing.:)

Swschz
03-27-2009, 11:41 AM

Never seen a watts link that wasn't mounted off the centre of the diff, link bars are different too, looks good... Also, did ur engineer say anything about fish plating the joins in the RHS chassis? And any reason why u joined RHS together in front of the diff instead of buying taller RHS?

CARfab

yeah, all butt joins must be gusseted or fish plated, having the watts link in "reverse" allows me to adjust the roll center of the rear suspension by changing the center pivot height. it has alot more to do with racecar setup and tech (aussie v8 supercars have an in-cabin ajustable center pivot!) , but that's my other hobby, i couldn't help a bit of it comming through on my truck.

and the original nissan chassis rails were 125x50x2.5mm (ish), and i cant get that size here in RHS, it will be slightly stronger having the 50x50 and 75x50 setup like that anyway, but probably not enough to make a noticable difference.

i should have an update with the shock absorber setup this weekend or next.

:thumb: slow and steady, i'll get there one day!

sorry everyone, ive been very slack, and lacking motivation and fresh ideas about trucks lately, as I've said before, i want to keep this truck for ever- or close too, so i want it done properly and want it to be everything i have ever wanted in a truck, no shortcuts. i found myself taking a few easy options when i was "not into it", so i have had a break, but im feeling the love again. and I'll put up some updates soon.

on a side note I'll answer a few questions above:

Micker: im in geelong. i do want to get to a few meets soon, i was devastated that i missed the torquay cruise, i only found the post on it a few days after it went down, when there is something interesting to show, i'll welcome anyone around for a beer and a chat. im always looking for more ideas and onions.

homewrecker: this will be my daily drive, it'll have a trailer behind it most days of the week, during the week it will have a carpenters tool trailer for work, on the weekend it will have the car trailer, for play:thumb:

wagondragger& minitucking, thanks a lot for the positive comments, it really does boost the motivation levels.

tislow: i want to know more! it would have to be wide, or a stretched styleside!, but mine is at 5.5-5.7m long will only just fit in a standard garage!! less than 100mm each end!

dubs095 & sam: its a whole e series falcon diff, seriously low ratio (3.01 or somthing) lsd 5lug disc brake, i was going to use the factory watts, but decided to go reverse in the end. (not 100% sure on keeping that yet)

on another note (and the reason for f-all progress on this), ive been practicing front tubbing on my silvia :D
