Here's the old setup that was in the truck, best number was a 162.4 with 2 Sundown SAZ-3000d's and a pair of DD 9518's. Sorry, there weren't any pics allowed of the inside while it was still competing, just during the teardown.
from the inside:

from the outside:

And the new box that's going in. Going to be a single SAZ-3000d on a pair of Ascendant Audio 18's and 18.8volts:

There is 2 ways to go about fixing that, either a step down module which is very problematic on a driven vehicle, or the simple way, running a dual voltage 16/12 battery, where you charge and run the audio off the 16V post, and then run the vehicle's electronics off the 12v post.

how do you go about doing that? special battery ? Two regulators?

1st thing you need is an alternator that is capable of charging at 18v with no problem. Mine is from Ohio Generator, and is a 300 amp Chevy alternator with custom brackets and has an adjustable external regulator from 13-20 volts. Then I use one of these under the hood:
http://www.kinetikaudio.com/hc16v.asp
The red post is the 16v post, and it's hooked up to the alternator feed wire and the audio system. You can also run the starter at 16V if you wish. The yellow terminal is the 12v terminal, and since it just runs out before the last 2 cells, it's getting charged all the time also, and is a part of the rest of the battery, just with an output before it gets to the last 2 cells, and I just rewired a little to have everything else in the truck hooked to that terminal, so that the rest is seeing an actual 14.4v, which is well under the limit of what the electronics can handle. It works great that way, I ride around with the voltage at 18.8 all the time, but the only thing that sees 18.8 is the audio setup, the rest of the truck runs off of 14.4, just like normal.

So is your amp designed to run at 18V or are you just pushing more volts to it so it plays louder with drawing less amps? I'm MECP Basic and never heard of this lol. Then again I work at Best Buy putting bluetooth and GPS hardwires in old peoples cars. It's exciting to get an amp install lol

Your amp has to be able to handle 18v, and most high quality amps will. I use the Sundown Audio amps, and they excel at 18v. Power output on mine at 12.8 volts was 3218 watts, power output at 16.4v was 5212 watts.:thumb: I've got a teammate who runs his at 20V for burps, although I wouldn't recommend that and neither does the owner of Sundown, but they're still burping every weekend.
The only other trick I have to say is that if you do run 16V, your remote turn on wire voltage must match the input voltage. I don't know why, but if it doesn't, most amps will click into protect, so I run a switch on my amps at 18V.
