Always liked these things but never looked further than pics. I know VWVortex is around, but is there a specific forum for this generation alone?

From being a mechanic all I know is any German car is a pain to work on. Not very reliable either.

There as reliable as you make them. And there not hard to work on, just have to learn about them.
Older ones are easier to maintain. Less bs compared to newer vw's.

You realize i'm talking about like mid 80's model VW's right? It can't be anymore difficult than a mid 80's Toyota really. All cars have the same parts :)

it all depends on which year you have. if its 89 and earlier its CIS engine managment that shit is real up and down and a pain to swap motors in. if its 90-92 i beleive its called digifant they are very easy to work on. very easy to swap motors in and such. all in all they are very good cars and you can build one on a pretty tight budget.
give or take a few on the years between the two engine managments. i could double check with my buddy hes knows just anything you want to know with mk2's
now if you got questions about any mk3's hit me up i know pretty much anything about them. (which is pretty sad lol)
http://forums.vwvortex.com/forumdisplay.php?2-Golf-II-amp-Jetta-II just start browsin around and you will find some pretty serious builds.

ya i want the round headlight model, which i think i have gathered is 85-88 roughly. i would probably just build the 16v motor a little and do the appearance stuff. possibly turbo or something. this is if i even go this route. i may just finish my toyota fully and then move on to this. just researching/learning more than anything right now.
if it's not the earlier model round headlight, it would be the 99 body style golf coupe.

Mk4's are nice cars. But if you find an old mk1 golf with the 8v. It should sound like a sewing machine.
Just a heads up if you ever listen to an 8v 1.8. Either way I hope you can scoop one up and start a build!
