Hello everyone,

My 2003 Frontier XE will be in need of a transmission rebuilt soon. The transmission currently grinds in to 4th and sometimes 3rd. The TOB will also start buzzing at times if I hold the clutch down at a stop light for to long. My plan is to replace the clutch assembly and have the trans rebuilt before I sell the truck (I don't want to sell anyone Junk).

I've found a nice rebuild kit for the track, to include snycro's for around 200 bucks, however I'm wondering if this is my best option. I imagine a lower mileage JY transmission will work just as well. However I am completely ignorant to the cost of Having the trans rebuilt, finding a reman'ed unit or having a JY unit put in.

Can anyone who has experienced either of the 3 give me a heads up on what I can expect to pay? Thanks!

I rebuilt the 5 speed in my gfs jeep, it wasn't very hard to rebuild but I did need to buy some special pliers to get the snap rings off and had to use the press at work to remove and install the new bearings. I'm not sure about the Nissan tranny but I'm sure its similar.

a rebuilt trans will run over $800. jy trans, if it was $200 or less and low miles would be my choice over putting the time into a rebuild, just because you can't be sure you won't need a part not in the kit like a shift fork. Luckily the 4banger trans parts are cheap and easy. I've built a few trannys (non-nissan) and they are really simple thou I did need a good press for the synchros.

Read through the FSM for a fronty/xterra/hb trans repair, may or may not help you decide.

Thank you for the information guys. I'm really having a hard time deciding if I want to sell this truck, it's been so good to me. But, my SHO's come first. Regardless, The trans needs to be addressed. It's not a big deal to me as I have learned to drive around it and have not ground a gear in it in a long time. However, I don't want to sell someone a truck with problems. I got some time, so I'm sure I'll figure it out.
