Counter-clockwise. It could be tight, and where it's located makes it a little difficult to get a very good grip on it.

just don't use a filter wrench to put it on!!! just tighten it as much as you can by hand.

yeah, those oil filters can be a bitch to get to. in my Haynes manual for the Frontier 4-cyl, they recommend removing the passenger wheel and peeling back the wheel well to get to the oil filter. hell, my arm is just small enough to slide in under the intake to grab it, so I go that way to just loosen it, then I remove it from the bottom. the fun part is trying to not scrape your fingers on the motor mount. I wanna one day get a filter relocation kit and mount it to an easier spot
I always just hand-tighten it because you really can't get any tools in there to get it. and if you can, you either can't get a good hold of it or not able to move the tool much to really loosen it. and I always get a Fram filter b/c they have that grip area so I can get a good hold of it to loosen it

use a k&n oil filter, you can take it off with a socket and ratchet and extension

not much room for that on my truck.

i used to take mine to jiffy lube and my little rubber apron thing is fucked from them ripping it off. oh well. i hand tighten it and still end up needing a filter wrench to get it off.

you are only supposed to hand tighten filters anyway, and if they seal correctly you will need a filter wrench to take them off unless you have an awesome grip and really buff arms lol

tell that to the factories. I get vehicles in every day that are first oil changes and the damn factory filter is on tight as hell. most of the new filters I get off have dents in them from the filter tools digging in to them to loosen them up

when tightening turn it til the gasket touches the metal then 3/4 a complete 360,should be good.

i spent 4 hours taking the filter off my little truck. i was beyond pissed lol
Its even more fun and exciting when BD'd, Definitly a Snug fit and wierd angle to get too. I use the Fram filters with the grip on the end, usually makes it easier to take off.

I'm bringing this back up...Did anyone ever relocate their filter? What is required and did anyone find a handy place to put it? Can it go higher or does it have to go lower or does it even matter? I may do this next oil change.

Hand tight is too tight! When the gasket hits, 1/4 to 3/4 of a turn. I had to take my xB back to the dealer because they were the last one to put the filter on and I couldn't get it off. Took them an hour and a half to get it off.

That's what I'm looking for, but that one seems dumb because you would dump oil all over the fender every time you took the fileter off

Some people just know their own strength. I have had a hard time once or twice. But only after some quick lube changed my oil. Now I only do it for this reason. If I get it too tight, its on me.

I have a snap-on three claw tool just for oil filters. Compact, 3/8 drive and will bite and turn any filter I've come across. They can be botches sometimes and this tool is the shiz. I'll get a pic tomorrow so y'all can go buy one....:thumb:

Does anyone know a part number for a cap type oil filter wrench to fit on a ratchet. Need one for the the stock Nissan filter on a ka24e, pn for the filter is 15208-55Y00.
I tired AZ, Shucks, Napa, Nissan no luck. Dude at the dealer says they use a strap, well must be a Snap-On strap the cheezy one I got doesn't do any better that he other junk I've tried.

When I got my truck, the filter was on so tight it took a pipe wrench AND a strap wrench to get it off. I drove a screwdriver through it before all that and all it did was shred the metal. considering the guy that owned it...he probably didn't oil the seal first.

^ Screwdriver trick works every time, just dont put the new one on the same way lol^
And if you read the instructions (at least on fram and motorcraft filters) it says oil seal and hand tighten still makes me wonder how they get so damn tight

Harbor freight sell a kit of different oil filter caps. Dont know how much but I have seen them on the shelves.

I tried, but the damn thing kept rolling around while I was trying to line up with the screwdriver and hammer. LOL
Seriously,I assume the suction from the oil pump and the heat from the motor create a seal inside the oil filter much the same way companies(and old timers) can food inside mason jars by heating a liquid and then putting a top on it. The air molecules get excited and move about when they are hot, then as they cool, a vacuum is formed inside. Now that science class is over, back to car talk.

You can put a cut open a gallon oil jug or something small that fits underneath that remote mount filter.. doesnt look so bad to me. I wouldnt have put it there, because I feel its a huge waste of space lol
The oil filter shouldnt have any pressure behind it really, between the free play in the oil pump gears, bearings in the motor, and everything in between.
Some of the nicer filters are made out of thicker metal which makes it really hard.
Ive always been really suprised at how damn hard my filter can be to get off, and i put it on myself and oil the gasket.. I dont get how it works either
I feel a thread diversion to oil coolers and thermostats next

only problem i have had with my oil filter was getting my truck up high enough off the ground to slide under it. other than that its not in to bad of a place and usually i can twist it off with one hand if its a fram, two hands if its not.

After reading this im glad I wasn't the the only that had problems with it...and better because some people would say "its just cause your a girl" after that one time of changing my own oil, im taking it to my friend and letting him deal with it.
