my buddys 96 maxima auto put a new starter in and it dosnt always engage the solenoid clicks but not always starts pls help

remove tranny and clean the mating surfaces of the engine block and transmission where the meet. It is not extremely common but I have done a handful. You could try another starter but this repair shouldn't cost a thing except some trans fluid. I have tried repairing this issue with ground straps and cleaning up the bolts but it doesn't work. Make sure the starter cable from battery is not bad and you didn't get a bad starter from advance. I use our nissan consult scanner and watch the POS count on data monitor and if it doesn't lock at approx 180 during cranking then that is most likely the issue.

Ive had 3 starters from Advance failed on me with 3 generations of Maximas.
more than likely the starter is not engaging all the way out

i have the same problem on my 95 maxima. but it starts after 2 trys?
