86 720. I did this in paint not really to any scale but you get the idea. I want to move the gas tank to directly where the rear xmember is. Using 2' square where the red lines are and use them to mount the tank by its flange.

Got a few questions, I've searched but haven't found quite everything.

Assuming that I have to keep the fuel pump near the tank, will extending my fuel lines cause any problems, running wise?

Where should I place the fuel filter? Leave it where it is, or keep it near the tank?

Thanks for any help

quick question are you going to have a link down the road and if so where and how?

Triangulated 4 link with a forward xmember, that's why I want the tank moved.

I have mine in that same spot, i left the fuel pump in the same spot and just ran new fuel hose... No problems yet..

Thanks Ratrod, I am glad I don't have to move the pump. I like the stock location and it's less work. I have a 34" rail to rail and luckily a 68"x2x2 layin around. gettin it done

Looking at your picture is exactly what I want to do, thanks. I want to raise the bed floor though. Also, did you have to move one of the bed reinforcement rails or cut it? I measure a 12" tank and those things are 10 and a half apart.

I had a custom one in the back of the box and the pump in the stock location, worked great. You may have to cut out the box brace though to mount it under. I bought a RCI tank thats alot shallower and I have to cut mine out for sure but im building a raised floor so im good.

Thanks dude, I figured I'm going to have to cut one of them. I'm thinking about grinding off the welds and turning it around so the mounts are in the same place but the brace is moved. I really don't want to cut a hole in the bed floor, seriously thinkin about the raised floor route.

I planned to bolt the tank's flanges to the 2x2 pipe, I realize now that there are no holes in the flange along the tank's longer sides. Can I drill holes close to the edges? will it leak? or do I need to make plates so the tank bolts at the ends like stock?

You can also look for a vehicle from the same era that would have used the same type fuel system, but a different tank. In my case, I'm using a Pathy tank in my Hardbody; it's designed to be behind the axle and between the frame rails. It's more symmetrical, and a lower profile. The fuel pumps should be the same, and the sending unit should be the same as well, so my gauge will work. Just a thought...you could probably use a Pathy tank, pump, and sending unit, and if the fuel pump pushes too much psi, you can use a fuel pressure regulator. It shouldn't affect the pumps' performance. Neither of the tanks are in my truck, so I'll try to remember to get pics of both of them side by side. I picked up the Pathy tank at a local scrap yard for $40 with the fuel pump, sending unit, and filler neck... Just make sure you take both ends of the plugs with at least 12" of wire and a repair manual with wiring diagrams so you can figure out what's what...
